Coconut Candles FAQ

Making our coconut candles

Think about what smells good to you, perhaps a jasmine plant you walked past or fresh lilies at the market, pine cones in the forest or even the sea air.

Now think about 'Pine Fresh' or 'Spring Bouquet' fragrances in common scented candles, air fresheners or reed fragrances. Really think about how they smell. They're nothing like the natural alternative but we can be conned by the shiny and new.

Our coconut candles are sustainably and ethically made with the environment in mind, using repurposed coconut shells that are cleaned and polished, then filled with natural soy wax.

The first burn

The first burn is the most important to avoid tunnelling. Once your candle's lit, don't blow it out until the top layer of wax has melted all the way across.

Each time you want to light your candle, start by trimming the wick. Trimmed wicks will give you a cleaner, brighter burn and prevent smoke.

Keep your wick trimmed

Try to ensure that your wick is always kept to 5mm long at all times. We recommend trimming the wick every 3 hours of burn time. When trimming, always extinguish the flame, let the candle cool down to room temperature, remove any wick debris and trim the wick before relighting.

Trimming your wick allows for a cleaner burn, brighter flame and less smoke from your coconut candle.

Maximising the scent throw

In order to maximise your coconut candles fragrance throw in a room, keep doors and windows closed and burn your coconut candle for 30 minutes. You should be able to notice the natural fragrances in no time!

Are coconut candles toxic?

We only use natural soy wax in our coconut candles which burns clean and is sustainably sourced and hand poured in small batches. Many cheaper candles contain paraffin (made from petroleum) or palm (a deforestation disaster). They are not only bat for the environment but also for you and your home.

Take the low tox challenge and ditch all your synthetic fragrance candles from your home. Make the change to our all natural coconut shell candles to compare just how fake and synthetic those candle fragrances were.

Are coconut candles safe to burn?

Yes. All our coconut shells are sanded flat for extra stability and safety. They are also heat and fire resistant to keep you and your family safe.

Place your candle on a non-flammable surface such as a plate, slate coaster or ceramic saucer before lighting. Do not place your candle directly onto or near flammable or heat sensitive surfaces such as glass or wooden furniture as the coconut shells get hot and may cause damage.

A metal stopper has been placed at the base of each wick to prevent it from burning past a certain point, leaving a safe level of wax left over at the bottom.

It is still important to always exercise caution when using candles. Never leave unattended and always extinguish after use. Make sure you keep your candles out of reach from your kids and animals and place your candle on a stable heat proof table.

Are coconut candles healthy for your home?

Enjoy the crackling wood wick and bright yellow flame as you indulge in the most luxurious natural scents. Not only are coconut candles great for your home but they're also beneficial for your rest and relaxation.

Because we only use soy wax, our candles burn clean with no soot or smoke. Just trim the wick periodically to keep your candle burning bright.

Staring into a flame can be a great way to mediate and calm down your thoughts. Whether you’re aiming for a romantic dinner in or a spiritual awakening you can bring the right blend to your home to create the ideal environment for an ideal head space.

Choose from our two natural fragrances: toasted coconut candles or vanilla chai candles.

Are coconut candles safe for dogs?

We know dogs love to try a bit of everything if given the chance. Breath easy because soy itself is not toxic to dogs and is actually a common ingredient in many dog foods.

Coconut soy candles are 100% safe for your animals including dogs. Just keep them away from the candle when it's burning by placing it out of reach (and out of jump height) from your lovable pooch.

Avoid placing your candle in light and hot rooms

Candle waxes and fragrances are sensitive to both temperature and light, so try to be careful when storing your coconut candles. Try to always store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This will help protect the soy wax from possible discolouration and fading.

How to remove spilt soy wax

If you accidentally spill candle wax, ensure that you let it harden so it can be easily removed in pieces. Cover it with paper towels, newspaper or similar spare material you have lying around and gently press with an iron on low heat. The spilt wax should melt and absorb into the paper.

Candle Safety

Candles are meant to be enjoyed, but it is important that you follow some common sense safety rules when burning them.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Extinguish all candles when you leave a room or before going to sleep.
  • Place your coconut candles on a heat proof surface to avoid possible heat damage to your furniture.
  • Keep lit candles away from draughts, ceiling fans and any air currents. Any form of air current can cause uneven burning, smoking, diminish the scent throw and even decrease the burn time.
  • Trim the wick to 5mm each time the candle is lit. This helps prevent the flame from getting too large.
  • Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.
  • Place candle holders on a stable, heat-resistant surface that is sturdy and large enough to catch any melted wax.
  • A coconut candle should not be burned for more than three hours at a time.
  • Do not burn the candle if the coconut shell is cracked, chipped, scratched or damaged in any way.
