Coconut Bowls FAQ - Coconutsy
Coconut bowls are suitable for both cool and warm foods and are an all natural product with blemishes and imperfections that give each bowl personality and remind you that you’re eating out of natures original bowl.
Are coconut bowls safe to eat from?
Coconutsy are manufacturers of beautiful coconut bowls, candles and cups handmade from up-cycled coconut shells. Because our bowls are recycled from natural sources they are also plastic-free, toxin-free, vegan friendly, food safe and eco-friendly.
Our coconut bowls are completely safe for you and your family to eat from right out of the box and with the right care will last a lifetime.
Are coconut bowls sustainable?
We source all our products from sustainable and ethical sources with a mission to reduce, reuse and recycle.
By re-purposing something that would have otherwise been discarded or burnt we are actively making the planet healthier by saving thousands of coconut shells from being burnt and releasing CO2 and methane to the atmosphere.
We are quite literally taking waste from landfill and turning it into something reusable for many years to come.
How are coconut bowls made?
The vast majority of our coconuts come from coconut farms in Ben Tre Vietnam. After the flesh, husk and fibre has been harvested the coconut shell remains as a by-product. Because the shells had no use they were discarded as waste and often burnt in their millions.
For a coconut shell to be hard enough to use as a bowl, the coconuts must be mature and strong. To learn more about our makers click here.
We reclaim these shells and sort the shells based on size, thickness and colour. The inside of the coconut is then cleaned and the outside husk removed and sanded down.
We then sand the outside and inside of the coconut bowls to create a smooth finish and finally polish them using virgin coconut oil.
Coconut bowls are made from nature and crafted by hand for you to enjoy.
How long do coconut bowls last?
Coconut bowls can last a lifetime with the right care and are very durable. I have coconut bowls in my kitchen that are over 3 years old and still look just as good as the day I started using them.
The trick is to treat them right. Always hand wash your bowl with warm soapy water and never put them in the dishwasher or microwave as extreme temperatures may cause your bowls to crack or discolour.
Your coconut bowl will fade over time with many uses, but a quick fix is to rub your bowls with some coconut oil to bring out its natural colour and shine once again.
Why use a coconut bowl?
These bowls offer a simple way to help reduce waste. Additionally they can be used hundreds of times and each time you purchase a coconut bowl you are saving a resource that would have otherwise been wasted. Why wait for tomorrow when we can take action today?
We connect coconut bowls with a healthy lifestyle and mindful eating. For us coconut bowls are all about whole-foods, fruits, veggies and colourful meals loaded with nutrients.
Coconutsy bowls are made for recipes and healthy masterpieces like Açaí bowls, Buddha bowls and smoothies. And as we all know when you eat well you feel good.
Are coconut bowls microwave safe?
We have done rigorous testing placing our bowls in the microwave with mixed results. Coconut bowls can be sensitive to extreme changes in temperature and our recommendation is to heat your food separately and then place it in your coconut bowl to eat.
Are coconut bowls dishwasher safe?
We do not recommend placing your coconut bowl in the dishwasher. The heat can seriously damage the shell, and your coconut bowl will not last very long. Dishwashers can make your bowl look tired and discoloured even after one use.
How to clean coconut bowls?
Our Coconut Bowls and Bamboo products are a great way to reduce your environmental impact, But like all things, they do require cleaning and some maintenance in order to look their best.
Coconut bowls are super easy to clean by hand with water and soap. Just place your bowl in the sink with warm running water and give them a clean with your coconut husk washer and dish soap.
Can you hand wash coconut bowls?
Yes. If you take care of your bowls by hand washing them gently and polish them once in a while then they can last you years and years. We recommend washing them straight after you have finished your meal and letting them drip dry on the kitchen bench.
How do I remove stains from my coconut bowl?
First, soak the bowls in warm water for 10 minutes. This will help soften the dirt and stains, and make cleaning easier. Next, use a gentle soap to clean the bowls and remove any residual dirt and stains. If that does not work, you can try
Use Baking Soda
Baking soda is a great cleaner that can remove most stains. Just soak the bowl in water and add baking soda, stirring until the stain is gone. If the stain is stubborn, try boiling water and adding baking soda - this will break down the grease and oil molecules
Lemon is highly effective in removing food stains. Simply add a tablespoon of lemon juice to a pot of hot water, soak the item for 10 minutes, and rinse it off well
Vinegar Is Best
Vinegar is a natural cleaner that will get rid of dirt, mould, and bacteria. To clean your coconut bowl, dilute vinegar with water before using it, or just soak the bowl in a solution of half white vinegar and half water for about an hour. Be sure to rinse all the surfaces thoroughly with fresh water after cleaning with vinegar to avoid any residue build up.
